“Do whatever it takes to believe what’s true.”
That was my closing exhortation to the listeners of
’s Podcast, That Was Stupid. After detailing my life with Jon and all the mistakes I’ve made over the last decade I realized in real time the core of all my problems: I’ve believed lies.
Did you know Satan is the author of lies?
“You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
—John 8:44 ESV
And did you know Satan has a plan for your life?
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy…”
—John 10:10 ESV
I’m not a genius but if 1+1 still equals 2 then I would say Satan has made it his ultimate mission to destroy us by telling us lies we’ll believe.
Yes — lies we’ll believe.
He doesn’t waste time with me trying to convince me drinking alcohol would be good for me. I would never believe it.
He spends all his time trying to convince me I’m worthless if I don’t succeed. Why? Because I’ll believe that one.
Much of the last decade for me has been a cycle. I make a mistake, I believe lies, I spend some time down in the dumps, then finally I’m brought out of the dumps by repenting and believing what’s true.
But how does that last piece happen?
By God’s mercy and grace and
With the help of Jackie Moore
It’s impossible to believe what’s true without the mercy and grace of God and it’s nearly impossible without someone who will faithfully come alongside you to help you discern what’s a lie and what is true.
My wife—Jackie—has been the prototype for what it means to be a helper.
She has an uncanny ability to draw information out of me that I’ve kept locked away. Often that information, when I finally share it, is easily exposed for the lie that it is. Jackie has a unique ability to see the way those lies are rotting me from the inside out.
Not only does she draw out information, she pinpoints the lie with precision and offers up truth to replace that lie.
The one phrase I’ve heard from her over and over and over again is, “No, that’s not true! This is what’s true…”
Why do I share all of this with you?
Well, one, I want you to know how awesome my wife is. I wouldn’t be who I am today without her. I mean that—by her courage to speak truth into my life I’m confident she has squashed Satan’s plans to destroy me time and time again. I’m convinced that anything good that happens in my life is a result of her prayers for me.
And secondly, I want you to know you need someone. Everyone needs someone. If you’re going to do whatever it takes to believe the truth, you need someone who is seeking Jesus who will help you believe the truth. Someone you’ve given permission to speak into your life and someone who has the courage to actually do it.
We can’t make it alone—Satan is too crafty.
I’m aware that some of you may feel like you’re all alone on this journey. If that’s you, let’s do 2 things.
Fast from a meal and ask God to provide someone to come alongside you.
Send me a message and I’ll pray for you as well.
It’s Satan’s plan to destroy us—rarely are people destroyed in true Biblical community. We are destroyed when we’re isolated or in a fake community that only appears godly. I want to come alongside you in prayer and ask God to give you a community.
Thanks for reading along.
